At KURTH PRIMARY we love AR otherwise known as Accelerated Reader. We use this program to supplement our reading program. We make it fun and a little bit competitive so it encourages the kids to want to read for enjoyment. The tests they take with AR makes it easy for the teachers to see if the students are understanding and comprehending the books they are reading.
To make it fun we use an incentive program that is based around a personal folder or log, stickers and the ultimate end of year award a trophy. Inside their folder they have a ledger that is like a spreadsheet where they record their books and the grade. Because our students are so young and don’t really grasp what a half point means, we chose to count points differently as far as reaching their rewards. We count all picture books as one point and all chapter books get two points. For every 10 tests that they pass, they receive a sticker for the front of their folder. If they have at least 10 stickers by the end of the year, they get a trophy at the awards ceremony in May.
