Denetra Slaughter has been named the Principal at Dunbar Primary beginning next school year. Dorinda Wade, the current principal, will be retiring after 31 years at Lufkin ISD with 14 of those years being the principal at Dunbar Primary. Ms. Slaughter is currently the Assistant Principal at Dunbar Primary.
“Ms. Slaughter will do an excellent job as principal. As her principal, I have seen first-hand her dedication to students and her creativity and commitment. Dunbar Primary will be in good hands. I have treasured my time here and know she will as well,” said Dorinda Wade.
Ms. Slaughter has held the position of Assistant Principal since 2019. Before her time in Lufkin, she was a first grade teacher at Tenaha Elementary School and Center Elementary School where she received multiple honors for Teacher of the Year on both campuses. She received her Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and Maters of Educational Leadership both from Stephen F. Austin State University.
“I am excited to continue a tradition of academic excellence and innovative learning while fostering a nurturing school environment for students to thrive academically,” said Ms. Slaughter.
When not at school, she enjoys Zumba Fitness, cooking, pageantry, and relaxing with friends and family.
“We are excited about Ms. Slaughter’s leadership and the value that she will add to the Lufkin ISD Team of leaders,” said Lynn Torres, Superintendent of Schools.
