The Junior League of Lufkin conducted a poverty training and simulation for the staff of Trout Primary and Brookhollow Elementary from 9 a.m.-noon on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Brookhollow Elementary. Living on the Edge: A Closer Look at Poverty is a simulation exercise designed to help people better understand the day-to-day reality and frustration of living in poverty. With a greater awareness of the impact of poverty, the Junior League of Lufkin hopes to more effectively address the poverty issues in our community.

Using a simulation kit, participants role-played the lives of low-income families and had the task of providing basic necessities for their family on a limited budget. Participants interacted with social service agencies, grocers, pawnbrokers, bill collectors and others during the course of their simulation. Living on the Edge enables participants to look at poverty from a variety of angles and then recognize the potential for change within their own community.
