For the past five to six months, coaches and administration at Lufkin ISD have been working on the logistics of beginning a baseball and softball program at Lufkin Middle School. What perfect timing to reveal that decision with the recent winning of the Little League National Championship by the Lufkin Little League team; the district is pleased to announce that a baseball and softball after-school program will begin in September for 7th and 8th grade students at Lufkin Middle School.

Baseball will begin on September 14th with practices on Mondays and games on Thursday nights. Coaches encourage students who are playing football to also play baseball. The games and practices will not conflict with other school-related sports. Students do not have to be in athletics to sign up but must attend tryouts to determine the make up of the team. The cost will be $25. To sign up, email Coach Cobb at jcobb@lufkinisd.org. The boy’s team will be part of the Universal Interscholastic League (UIL).

Softball will begin on September 12th and run through October 10th. Practice will be Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and will be scheduled around current LMS athletic practices so girls can participate in all sports. The girls do not have to be in athletics to play softball but will need to tryout for the team. The games will be on Tuesday nights with two games per night at 6 and 7 p.m. The cost will be kept to a minimum and determined by the number of girls who sign up. Contact Shelby Holcomb at shelbyholcomb@lufkinisd.org to register. The girl’s team will be part of the City of Lufkin’s league.
